Happening on July 25th, July 29th and August 1,2015, the Honda Celebration of Light is BC’s biggest event. It is not only the longest-running offshore fireworks competition in the world, but it also attracts up to 400,000 spectators along English Bay each evening. Owned by the Not For Profit Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society, 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the event, which contributes in excess of $39 million in incremental tourism and hospitality spending each year.
2015 will bring 3 new countries to Vancouver, guaranteed to put on world class Pyro-Musical performances each night.
In February 2015, Vancouver park board voted on adding more beachfront reserved seats for fireworks and allowing alcohol sales during the event.
Heather Sharpe, producer of the Celebration of Light, said the event remains popular with the public who can enjoy it free, but the addition of reserved seated areas and added beer and wine service appeals to guests who may be “looking for more mature and more cultured, pleasant surroundings.”
Sharpe said: “We still get 400,000-odd people a night on the beach, and they have a great time. But we’ve been telling them for years, ‘You’re not allowed to drink on the beach … ,’
Well, now if you do want to indulge … you can do it legally within a safe and controlled environment, and you don’t have to break the laws. ”
Alcohol sales have also helped get the fireworks extravaganza on stronger financial footing in recent years, making sure the event is viable into the future, Sharpe said
Police will work with event organizers to adapt policing strategies for each specific event, said Vancouver police spokesman Sgt. Randy Fincham, who added: “Over the years we have actually seen incidents of drunkenness and alcohol-fuelled fights decrease substantially as we have adopted new policing strategies to limit the proliferation of alcohol during community events.”
Not sure No booze equals No fun but participating countries and other event details will be announced in late April 2015 – Check back soon for updates!
